the pictures
That’s what Keith calls them. We don’t go to the movies, we go to the pictures. And boy did we see a lot in the last few weeks.
Avatar I really enjoyed it. All the second year lit kiddies seem to be deriding it for its ‘racist fantasies’ but I thought its sheer beauty and technological advancement made it completely worthwhile. And damn, Cameron knows how to use the big screen.
Donnie Darko (at home) Finally got to see this one. Wonderful and surreal and magical puzzle of a movie. Engaging, delightful.
Shoot ‘Em Up (at home) I’ve seen this before. Still, a most excellent and silly action romp. And Clive Owen, oh baby, oh baby.
Bolt (at home) Loved the pigeons, especially the ones in LA. Otherwise, meh, even for a kids movie.
Sherlock Holmes I had high hopes for this one, and was not disappointed at all. Smart and amusing, and so nice to have an action movie without semi-automatic weapons. Glad it was done by a Brit so London looked like London instead of Disneyland.
Aeonflux (at home) Nice surprise - highly stylish, interesting premise, fun to watch.
Primer (at home) Whuh? Didn’t care about the plot, didn’t care about the characters. Nice production values for an indie, otherwise: snoozefest.
Let the Right One In (at home) Ugh. The worst of the worst. Dull. Pointless. Donnie Darko had all kinds of little puzzling pieces that made up a big picture at the end - this one just had lots of pieces, scattered all over the place and no one bothered to pick them up. Many people have said ‘best vampire movie ever’ - ugh, no way. Vampires should be larger than life, or at the very least, well outside of the human condition. This story reduced them to the level of raccoons or other urban vermin; just another animal trying to survive in a modern human environment. Bleck. Horrible. Don’t bother.
Up in the Air Can’t say enough good things. It might need its own post. Go see it. Just go see it now. Fantastic.
