the process
Reading a book about a computer language called Processing. Author says:
I, on the other hand, trained as a fine artist, was taught to let go of the need to understand everything and to learn to find structure and meaning in the process.
Wha? I was never taught about finding meaning in the process of art-making, I was only evaluated on my end product. Did the end product express a meaning, start a conversation, say something? That was all that mattered to those who trained me. How I got to the end product was completely irrelvant, unless a series of works were being evaluated.
This ‘process is the art’ thing smacks of wishy-washy feel good ‘it’s art because I say it is’ bullshit so far. Yet, I will attempt to hold judgment until I’ve read more.
